Python Job Details

Grammarly is excited to offer a remote-first hybrid working model. Team members can work primarily remotely in the United States, Canada, Ukraine, Germany, Poland, and Portugal. Conditions permitting, teams will meet in person a few weeks every quarter at one of Grammarly's hubs, currently in San Francisco, Kyiv, New York, Vancouver, and Berlin, or in a shared workspace in Krakow.

Grammarly team members in this role must be based in the United States or Canada.

The opportunity

Grammarly empowers people to thrive and connect, whenever and wherever they communicate. Every day, 30 million people and 30,000 teams around the world use our AI-powered writing assistant. All of this begins with our team collaborating in a values-driven and learning-oriented environment.

To achieve our ambitious goals, we’re looking for an experienced Analytical Linguist to join our Ethical AI team. The person in this role will bring sociolinguistic expertise and experience working on technical products to help make Grammarly products fair and unbiased and to help shape Grammarly’s approach to inclusive language. They will define and develop data-analysis processes for bias and fairness, working with qualitative and quantitative methods, and they will inform product strategy with these findings.

Grammarly’s engineers and researchers have the freedom to innovate and uncover breakthroughs—and, in turn, influence our product roadmap. The complexity of our technical challenges is growing rapidly as we scale our interfaces, algorithms, and infrastructure. Read more about our stack or hear from our team on our technical blog.

Your impact

As an Analytical Linguist on the Ethical AI team, you will have the opportunity to help shape Grammarly’s approach to Ethical AI and inclusive language. To do this, you will supplement your sociolinguistics expertise by learning about the functionality of Grammarly’s product offerings, staying up to date on developments in language, and collaborating with cross-functional partners on our Product, Marketing, User Experience, Engineering, and Design teams.

In this role, you will:

  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses of language data.
  • Develop datasets representing different user groups and sociolects.
  • Identify risks related to bias, as well as opportunities to improve fairness in NLP and machine learning.
  • Advise cross-functional partners on inclusive language, fairness, and bias.
  • Establish evaluation guidelines for bias and fairness, as well as processes for other team members to follow.
  • Mentor other team members and ensure the team produces high-quality and consistent evaluations.
  • Research to stay on top of developments in ethical AI and inclusive language.
  • Contribute to technical blogs, conferences, and thematic meetups.

We’re looking for someone who

  • Embodies our EAGER values—is ethical, adaptable, gritty, empathetic, and remarkable.
  • Is able to collaborate in person 2–4 weeks per quarter, traveling if necessary to the hub where the team is based.
  • Has 3+ years of relevant experience working on NLP products in tech.
  • Has a master’s or doctorate in sociolinguistics, linguistics, or a closely related field.
  • Has a deep knowledge of sociolinguistics and the ability to perform qualitative and quantitative sociolinguistic research.
  • Is a self-starter who enjoys defining and driving projects while also knowing how to collaborate effectively.
  • Is adept at managing stakeholders and can build connections across the company, including with the Product, Marketing, User Experience, Engineering, and Design teams.
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills and effectively articulates their ideas, research plans, and findings.
  • Has a basic knowledge of Python or other popular scripting languages for processing text.
  • Has experience specifically working on questions of bias, fairness, and inclusive language in ML/NLP.
